2025 Essential Document Legalization for a visa in Taiwan: 1 Key Step!

If you’re planning to apply for a visa or an ARC (Alien Resident Certificate) in Taiwan, you’ll need to submit various documents like diplomas, transcripts, certificates, police clearances, non-criminal records, or civil status certificates from your home country.

Here’s what you need to do the document legalization before coming to Taiwan:

Document Authentication from TECO/TECRO:

Your documents must be approved by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECO) or the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECRO) in your country. This is a crucial step for your document legalization before you arrive in Taiwan.

You can find a list of these offices worldwide: https://www.boca.gov.tw/sp-foof-countrylp-01-2.html.

Simply take your documents and ID/passport to the TECO/TECRO of your country. We recommend getting a certified translation (Chinese/Mandarin) of your documents approved at the same time, as you’ll need a certified translation when submitting your documents in Taiwan later.

Appointment: Some TECO/TECRO offices require appointments, so it’s a good idea to check and make one if needed. Not all offices accept walk-ins.

Submission in Taiwan: Once your document (along with its Chinese translation) is approved, you can come to Taiwan and submit it to the relevant local authorities, such as the Taiwan National Immigration Agency or Household Registration Office.

Many offices in Taiwan welcome walk-ins. So, once your documents are prepared, you can visit these offices to finish the process. In some cases, we’ve even assisted our clients by making phone calls to communicate with the office staff. If you decide to use our translation service, we’ll be glad to assist you with the procedure.

Possible Re-Verification: Occasionally, authorities in Taiwan may request you to re-verify your documents at the Bureau of Consular Affairs in Taiwan. Don’t stress, you can complete the process in Taiwan. This process may take at least one working day.

In summary, it’s really important to have your document approved by TECO. It’s even better if we can get the Chinese translation of the document approved at the same time. If the Chinese translation hasn’t been approved yet, don’t worry, we can still assist you in getting it approved in Taiwan.

What If Your Document’s Translation Isn’t Approved by TECO/TECRO?

If TECO/TECRO approves your document but not its translation, don’t worry. You can ask a translation company in Taiwan for help. They can assist in getting the translation approved in Taiwan.

Once it’s approved, you can submit both the document and its translation to the local authorities in Taiwan, like the Taiwan National Immigration Agency or Household Registration Office.

What to Do If TECO/TECRO Doesn’t Approve Your Document?

If TECO/TECRO doesn’t approve your document, you have two options:

1. Contact Your Country’s Consulate in Taiwan: Reach out to your country’s consulate in Taiwan to get your document approved. Afterward, you can authorize a translation company in Taiwan to handle the remaining steps. Then, you can submit both the document and its translation to local authorities in Taiwan, like the Taiwan National Immigration Agency or Household Registration Office.

2. Seek Assistance Locally: Ask a family member, friend, or an agency in your home country to get your document approved by TECO/TECRO there. Once the document receives approval, you can send it to Taiwan. Then, you can authorize a translation company in Taiwan to complete the remaining steps and submit the document with its translation to the relevant local authorities in Taiwan.
